Nursing Orientation Checklist

Before you begin your first day of orientation, review the information on this page to make sure you have a clear understanding of all requirements and pre-purchases that you'll need to make. All information will be reviewed in detail during the required Orientation Session on campus, but there are some elements you'll need to do in advance and bring with you to orientation. Please pay special attention to the section below titled "Required to Bring to Orientation."

Orientation Sessions

Orientation sessions will be held in Walters Hall 100 at your specified date and time, as per your RSVP. All students are expected to attend one of the sessions. The orientation sessions will review the information provided here in greater detail, as well as provide you time to order your uniforms, meet advisors, tour the department, and ask questions. You must bring the items listed under "Required to Bring to Orientation" with you to the orientation session.

2019 Orientation Overview

First Semester Courses: Success in Nursing & Nursing I

Success in Nursing (NSTN 1001)

  • 1 credit hour
  • NSTN 1001
  • Thursdays 11-11:50 in Muntz 119 (immediately following NSG I lecture)
  • Course Coordinator: Dr. Henderson
  • Other Faculty: Dr. Ellis
  • Focus on how to be successful in nursing

Important Things to Know about Success in Nursing

  • No required textbook
  • Points for attendance and assignments
  • No tests
  • Required as part of nursing curriculum
  • Required minimum grade is 78

Nursing I (NSTN 1002C)

  • 7 credit hours
  • NSTN 1002C
  • Lectures on Tuesday 9:00 to 10:50 am and Thursday 9:00 to 10:50 am, plus 1 clinical day (Monday, Wednesday or Friday)
  • Course Coordinator: Dr. Gibbs
  • Course Faculty: Ellis, Gibbs, Hayes, Henderson, Linville, Martin, Mayo, Morgan, Smith
  • Focus is on fundamentals of nursing and older adults

Important Things to Know about Nursing I

  • Meets in Muntz 119 on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 to 10:50 am
  • You are required to sign in for the lecture
  • You will have readings and possible assignments to do before coming to the lecture
  • You can wear street clothes to lecture
  • You are required to have a laptop for this course
  • There are four tests and a final; dates are as follows:
    • Thursday Sept. 12
    • Tuesday Oct. 8
    • Thursday Oct. 31
    • Tuesday Nov. 26
    • Final on Tuesday Dec. 10 at 8:00 am
  • We test using ExamSoft on the computer
  • You will have a Blackboard course for the lecture portion of the NSG I
  • Minimum passing grade is 78 in testing, then the other assignment points are added in
  • There will be a math test you'll have to pass with a 10/10 on Tuesday of the 2nd week of class; if you don't pass on Tuesday, you'll have two more opportunities on Thursday of that week with different versions of the test

Important Things to Know about Clinical

  • Your clinical day will be Monday, Wednesday or Friday
  • You will meet in the Clinical Lab on your assigned clinical day at 7:30 am
  • You will need to wear your clinical uniform for all clinical days
  • You are required to meet all clinical objectives to pass the clinical aspect of the course
  • First seven weeks on campus, then transition to the clinical agency
  • You will have required outside practice time (open lab hours)
  • You will have a Blackboard course for the clinical portion of NSG I
  • Part of the clinical component is simulation; this will be during your schedule lab hours
  • You will have clinical on the reading day (Friday, Oct. 11). If you have Friday clinical and clinical on Veterans Day (Monday, Nov. 11) if you have Monday clinical, so don't plan to go anywhere, because attendance is required.

Next Steps

  • Register for NSTN 1002C after June 24 at 8:00 am
  • You will register for the section day you want and will be automatically enrolled in the lecture portion
  • Be on the lookout for the Blackboard courses to open with direction on preparation activities
  • Ensure you are ready for the first week of class (purchase your textbook, simchart, review BB and any preparation materials, and get clinical uniform and supplies)

Required to Bring to Orientation

At your scheduled orientation you will be required to bring the following:

  • Copy of your degree audit. Follow the steps below to obtain a degree audit through Catalyst:
    1. Log in to Catalyst.
    2. Locate the Academics tab at the top left hand corner of the screen and click on it.
    3. Locate the Academic Progress tab on the left side of your screen and click on the drop down arrow.
    4. Click on "Get My Degree Audit."
    5. Click on "View My Advisement Report."
    6. Click on "View Report as a PDF" tab.
    7. Print a copy of your degree audit and bring it to your scheduled orientation day. The print option is located in the top right hand corner of the webpage.
  • Fingerprint Form from Immunitrax. This will require you to create an account, pay your registration fee and print the required form from Immunitrax prior to orientation. You will have your fingerprints for the required background check done at orientation, and failure to bring the required form will impact your ability to get your background check completed.

Critical Requirements

Immunitrax Requirements

Entry into the UC Blue Ash Nursing program requires compliance with Immunitrax guidelines on a background check and immunizations. Review the step-by-step instructions on how to log on to Immunitrax, view the deadlines and get your background check and fingerprinting.

  • You will be using Immunitrax to submit the information found below:
    • Annual Physical
    • 2 Step Mantoux TB Test
    • MMR Vaccination Series or Immunity
    • Varicella Zoster Vaccine or Immunity
    • Hepatitis B Series or Immunity
  • Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider (CPR and AED) Certification
    • All students are required to obtain Health Care Provider Certification prior to the beginning of the Nursing Program. Students must maintain current BLS Certification during the length of their nursing program. American Heart Association or American Red Cross certification is acceptable. An online hybrid course is allowable as long as it has a hands-on practice component. Certification card with dates noted will be the required documentation. On-campus CPR courses are available; check the registration page for dates and times.
  • HIPAA Training Module Directions
    • Completion of Compliance Training or Competency Testing Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Training Module. Federal regulations mandate protection of patients' health care information. All students must complete an online module of introductory training to aide in the understanding of the federal regulations. 
    • The training module can be found at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center Continuous Professional Development website.
      1. Select HIPAA Compliance Training under the Compliance Training Section
      2. Under Compliance Training select HIPAA Compliance Training
      3. Under course title select HIPAA Privacy Introduction, February, 2016
      4. Click on RED UC Login (use your UC login user name and password)
      5. Complete the required reading and testing.
      6. Print your Certificate when completed and load the copy of the certificate into ImmuniTrax.
  • Essentials Form (form available through Immunitrax)
  • Consent/Release (form available through Immunitrax)
  • 2019/2022 Student Handbook will be available prior to the start of the school year. Once it is available, you will be sent a link to access and ready. You will then need to sign the signature page available on Immunitrax and submit through Immunitrax.

Required Purchases

During Orientation, you will have the opportunity to order books and uniforms. Please bring payment with you.

  • Textbook: Pearsons Concepts in Nursing: Volumes I, II, and III, including Code for Pearson MyNursing Lab.
    • Recommended Option 1: Package ISBN #9780134869742 Tech-Only Option, which includes Nursing Concepts 3e Volumes 1-3 print textbooks + MyNursingLab access PLUS print upgrade option available from Pearson via the MyNursing Lab website. Directions on how to access the upgrade will be made available at orientation
      • Note: Pearson does have bound bundles for a higher cost. You are welcome to purchase the bound bundle but note, you will need the 3rd edition.
    • SimChart: 1-year Access ISBN #9781455710867 or 2-year Access ISBN #9781455710881
      • Note: SimChart is available in a one- or two-year option. You will need to access your entire two years of the program, but the product cannot be placed on hold if you step away from the program. Please elect the option that is best for you but be aware you are required to have access for both years. So if you elect to purchase a one-year option to start, you will need to review for your second year.
