Special Statement from Dean Lightner
Dear UC Blue Ash Students, Faculty and Staff,
I am reaching out about the events of the past week, from the senseless death of George Floyd to the protests across the country that have followed. I am sad, frustrated and heartbroken by the lack of progress we have made as a nation in treating everyone equally, regardless of the color of their skin. My hope is that this is a watershed moment for our country. A point when we can pivot from our past and truly make meaningful change.
I am proud that UC Blue Ash College is the most diverse college within the University of Cincinnati. We stand in solidarity against racism and injustice. We have always made it a priority to provide an inclusive environment that is welcoming for everyone. That will never change.
We also take pride in providing an environment that is supportive for all students, faculty and staff. Along with the dramatic impact of the events from this past week, we saw the death totals from the Covid-19 pandemic recently top 100,000 people. These are especially stressful times in our country, and I know that our faculty, staff, and students are grieving. The Bearcats Landing has wellness and mental health resources that could be helpful for faculty and staff. Students can also reach out to our Student Life team via email and through WebEx by appointment; and you can contact BAStdLfe@uc.edu for general questions. Recognize that right now, as you’re processing a lot of difficult information and managing difficult emotions, it’s important to be kind to yourself and others, and maybe give yourself a break for not functioning at peak.
The core values of our college include “developing critical thinking and an engaged citizenry” and “valuing diversity in experiences and perspectives.” We have important work to do to create courses and experiences that embody these values for our students. I am hopeful that as a nation, as a university, and individually, we will get through these crises and come out of it with a better appreciation of each other and the importance of being inclusive.
