Why study Pre-Secondary Education : Language Arts?
The secondary education program prepares candidates to teach English/Language Arts to adolescents and young adults in grades 7 to 12. This one-year, non-degree, transition program allows students to start their education at UCBA before transitioning to the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services to finish their Bachelor's degrees. The Bachelor of Science degree blends course work, field experience, and internships to develop teachers who can meet the challenges and changing needs of schools and communities.
You may enroll in UC's Blue Ash College if you graduated from an accredited high school or preparatory school, or have a GED certificate (minimum composite score of 45). The college's rolling admissions policy allows you to start any semester: fall, spring, or summer.
High school students who are considering this program should take either the SAT or ACT college entrance examination for use in guidance and counseling. All students entring a degree program must also take the college's placement tests prior to registering for classes.

This program is an open admissions program, but in order to proceed to the Bachelor's degree from the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, the student must meet the following criteria and apply to the cohort in the second year. Talk to an advisor about the timing and requirements for applying to cohort. Note that admission to a cohort is not guaranteed; when the number of applicants exceeds the number of available openings, the better qualified candidates will be admitted.
To graduate from the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, a student must:
- Complete all required course work and program requirements.
- Obtain at least a 2.8 university GPA and a 2.8 GPA in content area (3.0 GPA is preferred).
- Be in good academic standing (that is, not on academic or disciplinary probation or suspension).
- Meet the college's residency requirement of 30 semester credit hours.
- File formal application for the degree by the posted deadline.
Candidates who succeed as teachers of adolescents and young adults:
- know how individuals learn and develop;
- can articulate the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and the structures of their discipline;
- effectively collaborate with others;
- demonstrate leadership;
- address issues of diversity with equity;
- use technology to support their practice;
- use assessment to inform their efforts;
- demonstrate pedagogical knowledge;
- are responsible, caring, fair, and honest; and
- are committed to social justice.
Graduates of the Secondary Education Integrated Language Arts Program who obtain licensure assume teaching positions in English/Language Arts. These graduates usually elect to teach in Ohio, but graduates teach across the nation. Other graduates can be other types of instructors and tutors.
Advanced degrees are generally required for director, principal, superintendent, librarian, and guidance counselor positions.

The University of Cincinnati's Blue Ash College is conveniently located in suburban Blue Ash and is accessible from I-75, I-71, I-275, and the Ronald Reagan Highway. We are relatively small, and our faculty-to-student ratio is low. You will find small class sizes and personal interaction with your instructors create the ideal learning environment. We also maintain close ties with area schools. In fact, Blue Ash College is the only college campus to hose an elementary school on campus! Ties to our local community are also strengthened by the experiential learning component we recently added to all education courses. You will provide valued assistance in area schools, as you connect learned academic theory to real-world experiences.
Transfer applications are individually reviewed, and acceptance is based on receipt of application materials, as well as official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended. An official evaluation of transfer credit from other colleges will be processed after the student's file is complete.
