Student Success Profile: Mackenzie Cornell

"Through being an ambassador and achieving what I have with my degree project, I definitely feel like UC Blue Ash made it possible and I've made it happen, and that has just been so incredible."

When she graduated from Miamisburg High School near Dayton, Ohio, Mackenzie Cornell knew she wanted to earn a degree in electronic media communications (eMedia). She just wasn't sure which college would give her the best path to pursue her goal of a career in video production.

Combining Education and Experience

Mackenzie was already working part-time as a video producer at WHIO-TV in Dayton when she started her college search. She found that UC Blue Ash provided the perfect combination of a University of Cincinnati education, an eMedia program with a great reputation, and a commute that wasn't too far from her job in Dayton. "I love the flexibility of studying at UC Blue Ash, it is a perfect fit for me."

Mackenzie also appreciates the way the eMedia program is advancing her knowledge and skills. "We focus a lot on technique, which drives me to continue getting better," says Mackenzie. "I have met some really talented friends through the program, and it's awesome to take the things I learn in class and implement them in the work I do at the station."

Telling the Story of Small Towns

As Mackenzie continues to pursue her career in video production, she is building on an idea that developed out of her capstone degree project. Her documentary, Sidewalk Stories, tells the story of small towns across Ohio: their history, unique attributes and other interesting information. The full version of her documentary on Lebanon, Ohio is available on Youtube.

Sharing her Passion for UCBA

Mackenzie's background as a cheerleader in high school helped her take the leap to apply to be a student ambassador at UC Blue Ash. She served in that role during the 2017-18 academic year and found that she truly enjoyed sharing her love of UC Blue Ash with others. "I'm very outgoing and I like to help people," says Mackenzie. "It definitely was one of the best years of my life so far; I really loved being an ambassador."
