Why study Patient Care Technician?

This 2-credit hour course micro-credential meets the requirements for students to be eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant (CPCT/A) exam. This will be appropriate for those who are seeking employment in areas such as hospital or long-term care facilities. It also allows for a pathway for an associate degree in the Healthcare Support Technician program, which then further allows students to be eligible for a bachelor's degree in the BTAS - Healthcare Leadership program.

The NHA defines the role of a CPCT as:

  • Provide basic patient care — bathing, feeding, catheter care, etc.
  • Acquire, distribute and administer patient care supplies
  • Perform safety checks and ensure cleanliness in patient rooms
  • Accommodate any additional patient needs
  • Obtain EKG readings and monitor vital signs
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures
  • Provide emotional support to patients and families,
particularly coping with grief and death
