Central Service Technician
MC
Why study Central Service Technician?
This 3-credit hour course micro-credential meets the requirements for students to be eligible to take the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA, formerly International Association Healthcare Central Sterile Material Management (IAHCSMM)) central service technician certification exam. This is appropriate for those who are seeking employment in areas such as ambulatory surgical centers or inpatient hospital settings.
The HSPA defines the role of a CST as: Preparing surgical instruments and devices. That means cleaning, inspecting, testing, sterilizing, storing and delivering devices needed for surgery in a healthcare facility.
Admission Requirements
A valid CPR-Provider card is required. Students will be able to register for one or more micro-credentials without academic pre-requisite. It is recommended, but not required, that the students take an Anatomy & Physiology and a Medical Terminology course.
Please note micro-credentials are not eligible for any form of financal aid assistance.
Students will be required to pass Central Service Technician course and be in the process of completing 400 clinical hours.
The Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) offers testing for those who have met eligibility requirements. A student who completes the micro-credential course requirements and passes the HSPA certification exam will be immediately eligible for employment. It also allows for a pathway to an associate degree in the Healthcare Support Technician program, which then further allows students to be eligible for a bachelor's degree in the BTAS - Healthcare Leadership program. Direct course credit will be applied to the HCST program.
