Why study Phlebotomy?
This 3-credit hour course micro-credential meets the requirements for students to be eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) phlebotomy technician certification exam. This will be appropriate for those who are seeking employment in areas such as phlebotomy.
The NHA defines the role of a phlebotomy technician as:
- Drawing blood from patients and blood donors
- Evaluating patients' ability to withstand the procedure and helping them feel comfortable
- Explaining blood-drawing procedure to patients and answering questions
- Performing basic point-of-care testing, such as reading blood glucose levels
- Preparing blood, urine and other specimens for testing
- Maintaining medical equipment such as needles, test tubes and blood vials
Admission Requirements
A valid CPR-Provider card is required. Students will be able to register for one or more micro-credentials without academic pre-requisite. It is recommended, but not required, that the students take an Anatomy & Physiology and a Medical Terminology course
Successful students will be able to pass the micro-credential course of ALH1020C with a grade of C or better, and pass the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician exam. Details on eligibility for taking the exam and passing the exam can be found on the NHA website.
This micro-credential will prepare studens to take the National Healthcare Association (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. Ths micro-credential will serve undergraduates as well as career ladder employees witin various health organizations in Greater Cincinnati.
A student who completes the micro-credential course requirements and passes the NHA certification exam will be immediately eligible for employment.

Students must achieve a grade of C or better in ALH1020C to graduate from the micro-credential.
